Sam Bramham

On Monday the 28th of April, a Paralympian visited our school; Sam Bramham. Sam was born without his femur bone, so needing to amputate his right leg. He loved to compete against his friends and when he found swimming, he was very good. He competed against able kids until he was contacted by people that let him compete against other disabled kids. Sam competed in swimming in the 2004 Athens Paralympics at age sixteen, this being his first Paralympics. He also competed in the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, 2007 South African World Championship and the 2008 Beijing Paralympics. For being a great role model for his younger teammates and his service for his country, he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal. He is quite the prankster, involving his leg in many pranks, such as; telling American media that his leg was eaten off by a kangaroo and faking a shark attack that ended him up in trouble with the police! He is currently training for the 2016 Rio Paralympics for Paratriathlon.

World Maths Day!

On the 14th of March, our school celebrated World Maths Day. Our whole class dressed up as scientists, even Miss Baker (or should I say Proffesser Baker)! In the morning, we had our usual classes until recess. At 11:30, all of the year sixes were divided into pairs or groups of 3 to play some games with each class. Riley and I played games with the year 5’s in our class. The games we played were 21 and relay; 21 is a game where everyone stands in a circle and each person can say 1, 2 or 3 numbers. You continue until you reach 21 and whoever has to say it , is out, now start again form 1 and go until the last person is standing. Relay is a game, when there is a bunch of numbers and everyone is divided into 3 or more groups. You call out an equation and each group runs out, 1 by 1, and grabs a number to complete the answer; first group to finish wins. After lunch, we did activities with our buddies and we did some maths art. I really enjoyed World Maths Day!

New Year

Even though I have already posted a few things, i just wanted to say that this year, I am still in the same class. It is great so far and I am really enjoying it! Feel free to look around and enjoy…

Year 6 Leadership Day

On Tuesday 4th of February, all of the Year 6’s travelled by bus to the Amberley Edmund Rice Centre in Eltham. This Excursion was all about Leadership, as we worked together in our leadership groups for different activities. One of the activities we did was build a structure out of newspaper and sticky tape and each team had to fit in there free-standing building.  We also had to write up a list of our team norms that we will all follow throughout the year when we are working together and we made a poster of ideas of how we can improve St Dominic’s. Another activity we participated in was making a poster with each-other’s faces and next to it wrote each of our qualities. During recess we played table tennis and air hockey and did some exploring in the gardens, but the best part was lunch time! We all got to have pizza and garlic bread, not to forget the soft drinks! At the end of the day, we were so excited to get our graduate jumpers that not one of us took off through the hot weather! After a long bus trip home, we arrived back at school after long day of fun.

Scott Kneller

On Tuesday 11th of Feb, the year 5/6’s talked to an Australian Ski Cross champion; Scott Kneller. We spoke to him through chat to a champ, on Google Hangouts with a few other schools but unfortunately, they lost connection. We asked him a few questions about his skiing career, recent injuries and the excitement of qualifying into the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.  He had recently injured his back and was almost ineligible to compete but he got the all ok from the doctors and he begun rehab to improve his back. Some of the year 6’s spoke to him last year, twice actually, so it was good to get an update on how he has been going. It was great to see Scott in Sochi, back on his feet, ready to compete and win some GOLD for Australia! We can’t wait to see what he has got in store for us at the Winter Olympics! He is an inspiration to us all and it will be great to watch him on TV, live from Sochi!!

Grandfriends Day!

On Wednesday of Week 4, our school celebrated Grandfriends Day! We started the fun by meeting our grandfriends at church, followed by a prayer celebration with special readings and songs for our Grandfriends. We enjoyed a walk back to school with our grandfriends, returning to a long line for tea and coffee followed by a few different plates of cakes. Afterwards, our grandfriends looked around our classroom and we all got the chance to show some of our work and what we have done during the year. Unfortunately, we only had the morning to catch up with our grandfriends but everyone had a great time! It truly was a great morning. Here is a photo of me with my Nana, Grandma and Grandpa…

It was also Crazy Sock Day, as we were donating a gold coin donation for a charity, ‘Sock it to Poverty’, for Socktoboer!
